Hi there, We are a family of four, myself, wife and two boys, 9 and 14. We are in Northern California and planning to move to Sugar Land, as I have a job offer. What are the pros and cons of raising a family in Sugar Land? I would greatly appreciate some input. I have read some posts about critters, geckos, mosquitoes, high crime, extreme weather, etc. I would truly appreciate some detailed feedback. We know it's a diverse city and that's the part I do like. Please advise. Cheers! |

Sugar Land is a great place to raise a family if you need to live near Houston. I would hate leaving Northern California for it though. It's a typical suburb. Nice neighborhoods with low crime. Good schools. Clean. Diverse in that there are many Asians and Desi. No public transportation. Lots of retail centers. |

It is a good place to raise a family. There are critters - but it is not unbearable. Crime - again, it exists, but it is not unbearable. I think it is generally safe. Weather - it gets humid... summers are from mid-May to mid-October. Usually the only "cold" period is in February, but not this year. Since in the last year we have had two major rain events - Sugar Land has had minimal (if any) loss of residential property. There are extra activities to do if you wish to do them, or you can be a homebody. |

Good place compared to what? "critters, geckos, mosquitoes, extreme weather" are going to be present everywhere in the Houston area. Otherwise, as others have said, Sugar Land is a great place for families, with low crime, and very good schools. |

We had two on our front porch yesterday. What an odd thing to be concerned about. |

The geckos are actually good for the ecosystem. You will definitely find them in your yard here. Coming from Nor Cal, your biggest adjustment will be the weather rather than anything you mentioned in your post. Sugar Land is nice. It's been covered ad nauseam in these forums in many threads. |
